Check Your Email Server! Exim Attack Hits Half of MTAs Globally

Last week there was a freshly reported email server vulnerability in the Exim MTA server code (versions 4.87 to 4.91), which is used by over half of the MTAs connected to the Internet. Just a few days later Cyren already found someone trying to exploit it. If you’re an email administrator, you should be aware of this new attack, the objective of which is to create a backdoor that could then be exploited for almost anything, since the attackers would then have full root access to the server.

Hacker News: Exim email servers are now under attack

"During the attacks, attackers create a backdoor on mail servers by loading a shell script that adds the SSH key to the superuser account. The script itself is located on a server on the Tor network, making it almost impossible to find out its origin. Most hackers attack systems based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Debian, openSUSE and Alpine Linux OSs, said Magni R. Sigurdsson, an expert from Cyren, told ZDNet."
